National Institute for Genealogical Studies Announces New Course Written by Genealogist Jean Wilcox Hibben: Demystifying Culture & Folklore

The National Institute for Genealogical Studies is proud to announce its newest course, Demystifying Culture & Folklore. This  course was written by genealogist, lecturer, and author Jean Wilcox Hibben, PhD., MA, CGSM. The first course start date is Monday, April 1, 2013 and it will be offered every three months.

Culture/Folklore and its accompanying behaviors, traditions, stories, etc. are an integral part of who we are as human beings. This course encourages students to explore their own roots to determine: How their primary cultures (Race, Ethnicity, Nationality) have influenced their ancestors over the generations and how their subcultures (religion, family, occupations, etc.) have been formed and influenced by the intergenerational folklore passed down from ancestors.

About this course, instructor Jean Wilcox Hibben remarked, “I believe that who we are is a compilation of our experiences and associations as well as our biological connections. When we understand our ancestors, we can better understand ourselves. By doing this, we can complete and appreciate our family circles.”

Beverly Rice, CGSM Director of the American Records courses says, “The culture and traditions that individuals bring from their ancestral homeland influence the decisions they make and the lives they lead. Culture and folklore influence us and our actions. This new course is unique in that it looks at family history from a different perspective. It helps students learn how family history research is more than just researching records. We are about what we inherited from our ancestors.”
