Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh 2013 Registration Announced


Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP) will open registration for its six courses on Thursday, February 7 at noon eastern. These courses sell out quickly, some within minutes of registration opening.

GRIP’s week-long courses will be held from July 21 through July 26, 2013 at LaRoche College, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Last year students from 28 states enjoyed a small collegial atmosphere where they were able to know not only their classmates and instructors, but the other students in the intimate campus atmosphere. Dorm rooms, just steps from the classrooms and cafeteria, make off-hours fun and friendly.

The six courses to be offered in 2013 are:
  • Intermediate Genealogy: Tools for Digging Deeper with Paula Stuart-Warren, CG, FMGS, FUGA. Stuart-Warren focuses on unusual resources, manuscripts, methodology, and analyzing records. She encourages the class to bring their own family history problems for brainstorming and discussion. D. Joshua Taylor, MA, MLS and Deborah S. Mieszala, CG, are instructors in this course.
  • Determining Kinship Reliably with the Genealogical Proof Standard with Thomas W. Jones, Ph.D., CG, CGL, FASG, FUGA, FNGS. Learn how to achieve genealogical proof by planning and executing focused research, citing the resulting sources, testing the evidence they contain, assembling that evidence into a conclusion, and explaining it clearly. Jones has edited the National Genealogical Society Quarterly since 2002 where many proof arguments are published.
  • Bridging the 1780-1840 Gap: From New England to the Midwest with D. Joshua Taylor, MA, MLS. Explore the migration patterns across New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio which left a scarcity of records and researchers more than one “brickwall” problem. Learn the methods and tools to overcome these challenges. Taylor is a former Director of Education and Programs at New England Historic Genealogical Society, and has appeared on the television program “Who Do You Think You Are?” Other instructors are Deborah Mieszala, CG, Richard Sayre, CG, CGL, Craig Scott, CG, and Paula Stuart-Warren, CG.
  • Your Immigrant Ancestors’ Stories: Writing a Quality Narrative with John Philip Colletta, Ph.D., FUGA. Having researched the stories, now it’s time to share what you know! Learn how to incorporate documentary information, family lore, and artifacts into a work that your relatives will enjoy reading. German, Irish, and Italian case studies will be enlarged with sample sources for other nationalities, colonial times to 20th century. Hands-on exercise lets you practice writing. Dr. Colletta is the author of They Came in Ships, Only a Few Bones, and Finding Italian Roots. Michael Hait, CG, is an instructor.
  • Advanced Land Research: Locating, Analyzing, Mapping with Rick Sayre, CG, CGL and Pam Sayre, CG, CGL. Understanding land history and records is essential for successful research and kinship determination. This course explores land distribution in the current United States by colonial powers, private land claims, federal land records at both the National Archives and the General Land Office, and local-level county or town deeds. Use of software and Internet resources is practiced in hands-on computer labs. Angela Packer McGhie is also an instructor.
  • Military Records: From Cradle to Grave with Craig R. Scott, CG. Examines the types, uses and functions of military records and the organizations that created them. Records exist outside of compiled military service records and pensions that must be searched for to get a full picture of a soldier, sailor or marines military and post-military life. Scott specializes in National Archives records and is recognized as one of the leading experts in military research. Other instructors are Deborah S. Mieszala, CG, and Richard G. Sayre, CG, CGL

All Day Genealogy Event at Huntington Beach Central Library






The Orange County California Genealogical Society (OCCGS), celebrating their 50th Anniversary, will be hosting the inaugural “Genealogy BASH and Book Faire” on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the Huntington Beach Central Library.

Ten of Southern California’s best family history speakers will give talks on subjects ranging from how the Internet is changing genealogical research to DNA testing for genealogy. Speakers include Barbara Renick, Randy Seaver, Jean Wilcox Hibben, CeCe Moore, Norma Storrs Keating, Dawn Thurston, Linda Serna, Brian Speckart, Richard S. McFarlane, and Gena Philibert-Ortega. There will be 20 lectures in four sessions from which to choose. There is a wide range of subjects that will be of interest to anyone who is researching their family roots. Seating is guaranteed if pre-registered on their website, www.occgs.com. There is a fee to attend the lectures. Parking is free in the large library lot.

Those just beginning their quest for their family’s history will have the opportunity to learn from professionals in free classes also held throughout the day. Free sign-ups are on the organization’s website, www.occgs.com.

2013 Minnesota Genealogical Society North Star Conference Call for Papers

January 22, 2013—South St. Paul, MN. The Minnesota Genealogical Society (MGS) announces a Call for Papers for breakout sessions of the 6th annual MGS North Star Conference, “Discovering and Telling Family History,” to be held October 4–5, 2013 in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota. The deadline for submission of proposals is Friday, March 1, 2013.

The conference will feature keynote presentations by Steve Luxenberg, author of Annie’s Ghosts, as well as 12–16 one-hour breakout sessions. Because MGS can offer only a modest honorarium,this call will be most attractive to genealogists in the Upper Midwest, but MGS welcomes proposals from any genealogists who would like to join us in the Twin Cities in October.

The program theme is “Discovering and Telling Family History.” The program committee will give strong consideration to presentations related to genealogical writing and publishing (both in print and online). The Committee also encourages proposals for educational presentations on:
  • Genealogy records and genealogical sources
  • Libraries and archives
  • Genealogical research on the Internet
  • Publishing options (print-on-demand, online, offset printing)
  • Software for managing genealogy research
  • Software for managing genealogy research
  • Technology for creating, capturing, and managing images
  • Genealogy research methods (including application of DNA and case studies that illustrate successful problem-solving)
Audience: The North Star Genealogy Conference is a small conference with high standards for program content. Expected attendance is approximately 125–175. The audience includes beginning, intermediate and advanced genealogists.

Format: Standard sessions are approximately 50–60 minutes. Illustrated talks are preferred. Proposals for two-hour, workshop-type sessions will be considered for inclusion in the program.

Compensation: MGS offers a $50 per session speaker honorarium, plus free conference
registration and lunch on Friday and Saturday. Travel expenses are the responsibility of the speaker. Consideration may be made for special travel circumstances.

Handouts: MGS will provide handouts to registrants in digital format (.pdf). Handout material, limited to four pages per talk, is required for each lecture presentation. Handouts should be submitted in .pdf format . Speakers who do not submit handouts by 15 August 2013 will be replaced on the program.

Technology: Speakers must provide their own laptop computer. MGS will make overhead
projectors and digital projectors available as needed; speakers are encouraged to provide their own projector when possible.

Key dates for presenters:

15 April 2013: Notification of acceptance of proposals
15 August 2013: Handouts due to MGS
4–5 October 2013: Conference

New Show to Feature Tips on New England Research


MILLIS, M.A. (January 21, 2013) – Professional genealogist and house historian, Marian Pierre-Louis has developed a new genealogy show in audio (podcast) format called On-Site Research New England. Shows will be broadcast bi-weekly through the On-site Research New England website (http://www.ResearchNewEngland.com) and will made available through iTunes.

On-site Research New England is a podcast created to help all people do historical research in New England. Researchers might be genealogists, house historians, curators, collectors searching for the provenance of antiques, photo historians, authors and screen writers doing background research, freelance writers and many others.

Each podcast will contain an interview recorded on location at a New England archive, library, repository or society. The staff will provide overviews and tips for researching at their facility. To conduct successful on-site research is to “Know before you go!”

The first episode, now available online, features genealogist Rhonda McClure speaking about the Microtext Department at the New England Historic Genealogical Society. The second episode will feature the historical and genealogical resources of the Boston Public Library.

Tips will also be provided for researchers who can’t get on-site themselves by providing a list of staff or consulting researchers who can be their on-site eyes and ears.

Blog book tours are popular trends in the general e-publishing world but had limited exposure in the family history community until Gena Philibert-Ortega introduced her book From the Family Kitchen to genealogists in a virtual book tour in August, 2012. Enthusiastic response to Levenick’s blog book tour shows that the virtual tour continues to be a welcome new event.

Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society Announces National Conference for 2013


NASHVILLE – The Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society is pleased to announce that its 34th annual conference is to be held in Nashville, Tenn., Oct. 10-13, 2013.

With the theme “150 Sounds of Freedom,” this year’s conference explores all aspects of freedom, including, but not limited to, such topics as literacy, death, the Emancipation Proclamation, religion, art, sports and music.

The annual AAHGS Conference is the premier opportunity to explore standard and innovative methods, resources, and findings related to the expansive history of African-Americans and the African Diaspora. Scholars and others are encouraged to submit proposals in accordance with the 2013 conference Call for Papers, also available at aahgs.org.

This year for the first time in AAHGS history, college students and journalists are especially encouraged to participate.

“It is too thrilling for the people who write the first drafts of history to have prominent roles in this historical examination of black freedom,” said Pamela E. Foster, co-founder and secretary of the AAHGS Nashville chapter and a key organizer of the 2013 conference.

“We also for the first time are encouraging college students to embrace family history and be a part of the conference that celebrates the sesquicentennial of the Emancipation Proclamation.”

AAHGS Nashville is hosting a meeting for members and others who want to be involved with the conference at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, in the Nashville Room of the Main branch downtown of the Nashville Public Library. All who are interested in the history of the African Diaspora are invited to attend.

Founded in 1977, AAHGS is a 501 c(3) not-for-profit organization based in Washington, D. C. Via its 30 chapters nationwide, AAHGS promotes scholarly research, provides resources for historical and genealogical studies, assists members in documenting their histories, and creates a network of people with similar interests.

Call for Proposals for the Fairfax Genealogical Society 2013-14 Programs


(Fairfax, Virginia)—The Fairfax Genealogical Society is pleased to announce that it is currently accepting speaker proposals for its 2013-14 programs. Proposals are being sought for monthly general meetings September 2013 through May 2014, monthly education classes September 2013 through April 2014, a one-day fair to be held 26 October 2013, and a two-day conference to be held 28-29 March 2014. All events are held in Fairfax County, which is in northern Virginia, just west of Washington, D.C.

The Society is always looking for new and exciting topics that span the range of genealogy and family history research. Topics may include any facet of genealogical research. Subjects should draw on the lecturer’s areas of expertise, yet be broad enough to appeal to a general audience. The Federation of Genealogical Societies Forms the Society of Preservation Patriots


The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) announces the creation of a new society to promote the preservation of records in the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA): The Society of Preservation Patriots. This new group recognizes donors who have contributed $250 or more to the Stern-NARA Gift Fund or the current Preserve the Pensions initiative, a project to digitally capture the 7.2 million images from the 180,000 pensions of those who served in the War of 1812.

Recognition for members will include a new pin designed especially for the society. The pins will be mailed directly to contributors. The names of members of the society will also be listed on the FGS website.

The Federation of Genealogical Societies has posthumously named Rabbi Malcolm H. Stern as the first member of the newly formed Society of Preservation Patriots for his vision and leadership. As chair of the Genealogical Coordinating Committee, he established the NARA Gift Fund, later named the Stern-NARA Gift Fund after his death in his honor. It was Rabbi Stern’s efforts that led to collecting money to then microfilm and distribute copies of high value records for genealogists to the regional National Archives Branches records that were held at NARA in Washington, DC. Long known for his tireless efforts, he challenged member societies of FGS to ask each of their members to contribute $1 per year toward the fund, a request that still stands today.

Over the years, through the generous donations of the genealogical community, numerous records have been microfilmed and made available to genealogists. A few examples are:
  • M1359: Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at Galveston, Texas, 1896-1948
  • M1878: Records of the Sultana Disaster, April 27, 1865
  • M2019: Records Relating to War of 1812 Prisoners of War
  • M2014: Burial Registers for Posts, Camps and Stations, 1768-1921
  • M2025: Registers of Applications for the Release of Impressed Seaman, 1793-1802
  • M1846: Record Cards of Carriers Separated from the Postal Service, 1863-1899

WikiTree Announces Free GEDCOM Comparisons


January 8, 2013: WikiTree is proud to announce its new GEDMatches tool, open to all genealogists. This tool enables anyone with a GEDCOM to compare their family tree with the worldwide family tree being grown by the WikiTree community.

GEDMatches does an automatic search for each individual in a GEDCOM (up to 5,000 individuals). Each one is compared with the names and dates of the 4.3 million people in the shared tree. Suggested matches are presented in a convenient, sortable table.

The genealogist can compare each suggested match side-by-side with the person in their GEDCOM. If it appears to be a match they can post a comment on the WikiTree profile or send a private message to the profile manager.

To use GEDMatches, a genealogist simply has to register as a temporary guest member and then upload their file. The report will be ready within about 10 minutes. There is no commitment to participate on WikiTree or contribute any data to the project.

There is no catch. Temporary guest memberships and GEDMatches reports are automatically deleted unless the member volunteers to be a contributing Wiki Genealogist and signs the Wiki Genealogist Honor Code. If they do become a full member and want to import their GEDCOM, GEDMatches enables them to do it without creating duplicates on the shared tree.

GEDMatches, along with every other feature and function on WikiTree, is completely free.

The Family History Writing Challenge Motivates Members to Write Their Stories


The Family History Writing Challenge returns for the third year of motivating family historians dedicating daily time for writing their family history stories.

Family historians wishing to take up the torch of writing their stories are encouraged to put down the microfilm and pick up the pen for the month of February, and start writing their family history stories.
Upon signing up for The Family History Writing Challenge, participating members are invited to declare a goal in the form of a word count and to commit to completing that word count during the 28 days in February. In exchange for the commitment, Lynn Palermo (The Armchair Genealogist) host of the month long challenge will send out daily newsletters that include motivational messages, writing lessons, along with instructional guest posts by leading genealogists, published authors and editors.

Lynn Palermo states, “by committing to a daily word count my hope is for all participants to make substantial headway in their family history writing goals and to create long lasting writing habits that will carry them forward throughout 2013.”

Lynn encourages members to sign up early to take advantage of the January newsletters that will help participants organize themselves to begin writing on February 1st. A forum for the event is available to participants who want to exchange ideas, struggles and successes in a more intimate atmosphere.

Special guest authors include certified genealogist, author and writing instructor Sharon DeBartolo Carmack from www.NonfictionHelp.com and author, speaker, genealogist and writing instructor Lisa Alzo from The Accidental Genealogist. BCG’s New Blog: SpringBoard: News and Notes


The 49-year-old Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG), the group that wrote the book on genealogical standards, recently joined the blogosphere with its blog, SpringBoard: News and Notes, accessed from http://www.BCGcertification.org.

According to BCG president Elissa Scalise Powell, CGSM, CGLSM, of Pennsylvania, the blog will communicate news about BCG and events it sponsors or participates in. Early posts introduced officers Powell; vice-president Michal Ramage, J.D., CG, of Pennsylvania; secretary Dawne Slater-Putt, CG, of Indiana; treasurer Jeanne Larzalere Bloom, CG, of Illinois; and member-at-large Stefani Evans, CG, of Nevada; and gave notice of a fee change effective January 1. Another post announced new audio clips from three Board-certified genealogists describing why they chose to seek certification.

Future posts will come from BCG officers, trustees, and committee members and will include
  • names and profiles of new certificants (whose portfolios of work have been judged to meet the standards set out in the BCG Genealogical Standards Manual),

  • Births and deaths began to be recorded in Baltimore city in 1875—almost 25 years prior to the 1898 start of statewide vital registration.
  • The Maryland State Archives has digitized many original records and indexes, available at no cost on their website.

Many old favorites made the list, as well as some interesting new genealogy websites. As well, there were some rising genealogy stars that made significant traffic gains this year.

“Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2013" Conference Announced

The International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG) and the Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) announce an innovative, important one-day DNA conference, “Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2013,” to be held June 6, 2013, in conjunction with the Southern California Genealogy Jamboree.

The featured speaker is Dr. Spencer Wells of the National Geographic Genographic Project, who will review the Genographic Project. Other speakers presenting state-of-the-art uses of DNA in the search for ancestors include The Genetic Genealogist Blaine Bettinger, JD; Tim Janzen, MD; The Legal Genealogist Judy G. Russell, JD, CG; Your Genetic Genealogist CeCe Moore; DNA Testing Adviser Richard Hill, MBA; and Katherine Hope Borges, the director of ISOGG. Additional speakers will be announced soon. Also participating in the day-long seminar will be representatives from the major commercial DNA organizations – FamilyTreeDNA, 23andMe, and AncestryDNA.

Separate tracks will be targeted for beginners and advanced genetic genealogists. One-on-one consultations will be available during the final hour of the day. Help is available to interpret results and to use the various testing organization websites and resources. This personal assistance will help even the most inexperienced family historians apply genetic genealogy as another tool in their research toolbox.

What makes this event so special? “This is the very first genetic genealogy conference that is independently produced by societies such as ISOGG and SCGS,” explained CeCe Moore, the conference co-chair. “I have dreamed of an ISOGG-sponsored genetic genealogy conference for a long time, and I am thrilled to be working in cooperation with the SCGS Jamboree on this inaugural event. Holding the conference in conjunction with the Genealogy Jamboree helps us reach many family historians who would otherwise not be able to attend.”

“We are so excited about breaking new ground in genetic genealogy gatherings,” said SCGS president Alice Fairhurst, who also leads the society’s DNA interest group and has been actively applying DNA in her own genealogy research. “As more family historians have DNA tests, genetic genealogy is becoming more valuable in the search for ancestors and living relatives.”

Online registration for “Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2013” opens on Friday, January 4, 2013.  The conference will be held at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport, 2500 Hollywood Way, Burbank, CA. Early-bird discounted registration is $175 for SCGS members and $195 for nonmembers. Prices increases after 30 April 2013.

Casa Italia Chicago Creates Genealogy Department



Chicago, Illinois – January 4, 2013: Jennifer Holik of Generations collaborates with staff at Casa Italia Chicago to create a new genealogy department. The mission of the Genealogy Department is to collect, catalogue and preserve vital records, documents, published materials, artifacts, and stories pertaining to the family history of Italian Americans in Chicago.

This department’s dedicated and energetic team works in conjunction with the Roselli Library goal of building the most comprehensive archive of Chicago Italian Americana in the Midwest. Scholars, students, authors, and family historians can utilize these materials to research a number of fields including sociology, religious studies, demography, and immigration. Currently, our resources include archives, newspaper articles, religious histories, oral history transcripts, ancestral town information, videos of past genealogy programs, Fra Noi articles and newspapers, the Communes of Italy publications, and many other genealogical references.

The department will present programs throughout the year for adults and children. A monthly genealogy group will form offering research assistance and programs presented by local genealogical speakers.

Casa Italia Chicago is a non-profit organization in Stone Park, Illinois, where people meet to pursue common goals, preserve our past, celebrate our heritage and ensure passage of values to future generations. Casa Italia offers a children’s summer camp, Italian language classes, and cultural programs throughout the year.

Three Genealogy Professionals Unite to Present #GENCHAT; Genealogy Twitter Chats



Corn & Cotton Genealogy, Finding Our Ancestors and Ancestral Journeys Will Start Regular Twitter Chats in January, 2013

If you are interested in learning about resources, skills, methodology and techniques to further your family history research, the help you need may have just arrived. Three genealogy professionals: Stephanie Pitcher Fishman, owner of Corn & Cotton Genealogy; Terri O’Connell, owner of Finding Our Ancestors; and Jen Baldwin, owner of Ancestral Journeys; are reaching across state lines using the power of Twitter to answer your questions and create an environment of collaboration. Beginning January 25, 2013, they will combine their efforts to bring you #genchat, a Twitter Chat focusing on genealogy related topics, skills and questions. The chat will be hosted every two weeks, beginning at 9:00pm CST, and lasting for one hour. The chats will be oriented towards hobbyist genealogists and family historians; all interested are welcome to participate.

Between them, they bring 43 years of genealogy research experience to the Twitter platform. Individually, they each run a professional genealogy business and their areas of expertise range from the Midwestern United States, to integrating family history into home education, and the Rocky Mountain corridor. Each are also involved in various genealogy related projects, such as the digi-mag, The In-Depth Genealogist, and the upkeep of Conference Keeper, a site dedicated to compiling world-wide resources on educational opportunities for family historian’s.
