Live Q&A with Practical Archivist this Sat 10/18

To celebrate Family History Month and American Archives Month…

The Practical Archivist is offering
a free web chat on her Facebook page,

"3 Secrets Every Archivist Knows That Will Help You Organize,
Preserve & Share Your Family Photos"

Madison, WI October 15, 2014 - Sally Jacobs, known online as The Practical Archivist, has announced her first live Facebook chat will take place this Saturday — October 18, 2014 from 4:15pm-5:45pm Central Time. The free online chat will be hosted on Sally's Practical Archivist Facebook Page: There is no charge to participate, no pre-registration required, and no software to download...but you *do* need to have a Facebook account.

Keepers of ancestor photos are encouraged to bring questions they have about how to organize, preserve and scan their one-of-a-kind treasures.

  • Not sure what kind of boxes you need?
  • Wondering whether slip-in sleeves are a good idea…and whether it matters that they’re from a discount store?
  • Skeptical about whether an ink pen is the right tool to mark the back of a photo?
  • Confused about the difference between ppi and dpi?

Sally can help.

“October is both Family History Month and American Archives Month, and therefore I'm offering a no-cost web chat designed to help family historians become better family archivists. I’ll share 3 secrets every archivist knows that will help you organize, preserve and share your family photo treasures from every era…then I’ll stick around to answer your specific questions about the photos in your care "

Ermadene Able is a graduate of Sally's Joy of Organizing Photos program, and wants other family archivists to hear her tale of narrowly-avoided disaster: "Before, my precious ancestor and family photos, movies, videos and linen heirlooms were vulnerable to damage due to the way I was storing them. Sally taught me how to store them all properly. This was good because not long after I moved them to a new location, our hot water heater flooded where some of the photos had been. How is that for timing? Thank you, Sally!"

Worried you’ll forget to join the live chat and miss it? You can set up your own email reminder and choose to be reminded 1 day ahead, 1 hour ahead, or 15 minutes ahead:

So busy this Saturday that you already know you’ll miss it? The live chat will be available on the Practical Archivist Facebook page for “replay” for the rest of the month of October, Sally has offered to accept questions ahead of time via email: She asks that you send in your question before Friday evening if you want them to be considered.
