Facts and finds
Our collection of Herefordshire baptisms contains a record for Thomas Spring, a bare knuckle boxer who was heavyweight champion of England from 1821 until his retirement in 1824. Born Thomas Winter at Witchend in Fownhope in 1795, Spring’s most famous fight against Irish fighter Jack Langan drew a crowd of some 40,000 and lasted 77 rounds. After his retirement he became landlord of the Castle Inn at Holborn in London, where he arranged the patronage and contracts of many of the major boxing events of the period while overseeing fair play in the ring.

Facts and finds
Our collection of Jersey baptisms includes records for the British-American socialite, actress and producer, Lillie Langtry. Born Emilie Charlotte Le Breton in 1853 in the parish of St Saviour, Lille moved to London upon her marriage in 1876. Soon, her striking looks and charming personality attracted interest, commentary, and invitations from artists and society hostesses, and she became celebrated as a young woman of great beauty and charm. By 1881 she was widely known as the “Jersey Lilly” and became an actress who starred in many plays in the UK and the United States, eventually running her own stage production company. In later life she performed "dramatic sketches" in vaudeville and was also known for her relationships with noblemen, including the Prince of Wales, the Earl of Shrewsbury, and Prince Louis of Battenberg.
